Gardening, 2013

mayspinach13Late May, 2013:

We had our real taste of our spinach in mid-May. It was, as usual, sweet and pesticide-free.

That's my wife ready to cook it for dinner. She guestimated that this amount would cost at least $7 in the local farmers' market. Another bunch will be ready shortly.

We are a double 60-foot row of spinach (120 feet total) coming up in our big garden - time to weed so that it will be ready within the month.

You can't beat the healthy taste of food grown in your own backyard.

Late April, 2013:

The garden is beginning to take shape.

spinachmay13Last year's planting of spinach is getting ready for clipping, and new spinach, to fill in the vacant spaces, is sprouting. It is an amazing sight to see the fall crop reappear in the cold frames in February. Talk about 'continued productivity.' I've added a double row of spinach in our 60-foot-long regular garden which should be showing signs of life shortly. Lettuce is coming along.

A double row of peas is now several inches tall and shortly, the beets and carrots will go in. Much too early for squash, cucumbers and tomatoes since we get a cold wind from the ocean until mid to late May. But that's what cold frames are for - early plantings protected from the lingering May frost and wind chill.

And the beehives are back!
